Lawlessness On The Border: The Murder Of An Agent

According to the website The Hill, Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was shot and killed, ostensibly by Mexican drug gangs.  This is the sort of lawlessness on the border that has to be stopped.

As a Libertarian, I think that we should have borders that are open, but there should be a process for legalizing people that come here.  It shouldn't be a "free-for-all."  Our country was built on immigration.  If you really want to get technical, even the Native Americans were Immigrants.  We as 21st century Americans don't have the market on this country.  In my opinion, I think that we sometimes forget that there are still countries out there in the world that have oppressive regimes and horrible economic conditions.  America has always been seen as the land of opportunity, and to that end we should allow people to come here legally.

That said, people sneaking across the border, or women coming here and having babies in order to be able to anchor themselves in the country is a poor practice.  The 14th Amendment was never meant to be interpreted this way.  I don't think we should boot out the illegals we have now that are hard working members of society and havn't commited any crimes, but I do think that they should be made to go through a process of legalization.  Those that have committed crimes should be shipped back from whence they came, never to be allowed to come back.

When it comes to Mexican drug gangs on the border killing people, we need all the troops we can get.  President Obama needs to stop dilly-dallying and amass troops on the border and shoot to kill these drug toting peices of crap.  If we send the message that we will not stand for the import of illegal drugs and the killing of American citizens by Mexican criminals, maybe Felipe Calderon will get off his butt and do something to fix his drug problem.
